Flu Vaccine Information For Patients Autumn/Winter 2020

Dear Patient,

The following information is to inform you of the changes to the vaccination programme this year and give you the key dates to help ensure you can be available for your vaccinations.

Due to the impact of Coronavirus we are making some significant changes to how we manage our seasonal immunisation programme for our patients this year. We are planning for our biggest ever uptake of the flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccine this year and these changes are designed to help achieve that as safely and as early as possible to help give the maximum protection to our patients and the NHS. Eligibility is based on age or personal risk factors as in previous years.

Invited patients will be eligible for either the flu vaccine, flu plus shingles vaccine, flu plus pneumonia vaccine, or all three. If you receive an invite please make every effort to attend on your nominated date and time slot and we encourage all patients to consent to all eligible vaccines. If you are unable to attend, please telephone the surgery and leave a message by choosing 'Option 2' (Cancel Appointment)

In order to make this as safe and efficient as possible we will be holding a number of flu “events” in September and October at our Moss Valley and Gosforth Valley Practices, including at weekends and evenings. If you are eligible for a free flu vaccine on the NHS you will be contacted via text or letter and allocated a date and a time slot to attend. We will be prioritising our most at-risk patients first and the invitations to attend will be based on individual patients risk and the vaccine delivery dates. All eligible patients will be able to have their vaccination this winter so if you do not receive an invitation for the opening events please wait to be contacted. We anticipate the eligibility may extend to 50-64 year-olds later in the winter, so additional eligible patients will be contacted later in the season if applicable.

These flu clinics will be run on the following dates at both practices in Eckington (Moss Valley) and Dronfield (Gosforth Valley):

Wednesday afternoon 14th October 2020

Monday 21st September - 6pm to 8pm - Gosforth Valley Medical Practice in Dronfield

Wednesday 23rd September - 6.30pm to 8.30pm - Moss Valley Medical Practice in Eckington

Saturday morning/afternoon 12th September 2020

Please read the following details carefully so that you can prepare for your vaccination slot:

  1. Your time slot is fixed in order to ensure safe social distancing and keep queuing to safe and efficient levels. Please ensure you attend during this slot. If you are unable to attend you will need to book in for a flu vaccination at a later date once the flu events have been completed, after mid-October.
  2. The queues will appear longer due to social distancing, but please do not be put off by this, THE QUEUE WILL MOVE VERY QUICKLY once patients are brought inside for vaccination. Please be patient, vaccination itself should only take around 3 to 5 minutes.

  3. All queues will be outside the building so please bring appropriate clothing for the weather and keep your distance from the patients in front and behind you, keeping to the marked lines. If possible wear a short-sleeved top to make vaccination in the upper arm more easily accessible.

  4. Do NOT attend if you are unwell or have a temperature, new cough, or loss/change of taste or smell.

  5. You must wear a face covering at all times, including when queuing outside. You will not be allowed to queue or have your vaccination without a face covering.

  6. Parking at the Practice will be limited. Please try and find alternative parking prior to your slot or travel on foot if possible in order to reserve parking for those with mobility impairment or disabilities.

  7. Please do not attend if you haven’t received an invite for a particular flu clinic or time slot. We will not be able to vaccinate those patients who haven’t received an invite at the special flu clinic events. All eligible patients will be able to get vaccinated during the flu season but the flu events listed above are only for those patients identified and invited via text or letter.

  8. The type of vaccine you receive will depend upon your age and if you are also having a pneumococcal or shingles vaccine. You can find the product information leaflet details on the following websites:

After the initial flu events we will recall those who didn’t manage to attend their initial slot IF supplies are still available. We would therefore advise you to attend your given appointment if at all possible.

As a Practice we appreciate this has been an extremely difficult and challenging time for patients and staff during this unprecedented pandemic. The seasonal vaccination programme has never been so important for the safety of patients, family and friends and to protect the NHS.

With your co-operation we hope to be able to deliver your annual vaccinations as safely and as efficiently as possible.

Thank you for your support
